Charting a course for a changing world
OPEN-ACCESS
How I can help
Open Access transformation
Whether you are launching new products or converting your publishing business from subscription, Open Access can seem daunting. I will work with you to plan a sustainable business model that considers your author and subscriber base, the availability of funding in your field, and other key factors.
STANDARDS COMPLIANCE
Meeting the latest technical standards and regulations can seem tedious, but ensuring your content is compliant is essential for discoverability and preservation, increasing your sales potential. Whether you want to unjumble JATS or modify MARC, I can help you and your team identify and implement the standards which are relevant to your business.
Optimise operations
An old colleague used to say that “things happen because Tasha makes it so”: with a background in technology and operations, I enjoy helping people identify what it is they need, untangling their inefficient business processes, and coaching them through the resulting changes.
Project and technology specifications
Projects, particularly technology projects, have a habit of expanding past their original boundaries. I use proven business analysis and facilitation techniques to create project and technology specifications that are practical, deliverable, and easy for non-technical colleagues to understand.
Publishing nerd, Open Access advocate and conference knitter extraordinaire…
Since joining the scholarly publishing community in 2001, I have held roles within learned societies and commercial publishers across operations, technology, editorial and executive functions, while donating time to key industry initiatives and bodies such as UKSG, ALPSP and STM. That broad overview gives me a deep understanding of and appreciation for the changing pressures on the knowledge community, from publishers to libraries, funders to researchers.
I believe that not-for-profit, community-led publishers like learned societies and university presses have an opportunity to play a bigger role in the future of scholarly publishing, making sure that it is fit for the next generation of researchers, and launched Mellins-Cohen Consulting in 2020 to help.
In 2022 I stepped up from volunteering to run COUNTER, the standard for usage metrics, alongside my consulting work – so I don’t provide consulting services on COUNTER compliance, as it would be a conflict of interest.
